No matter how slight a difference between a duvet and its cover might be, the duvet is actually a comforter, fitting into a specially designed fabric casing, which is called duvet covering. Duvets are usually dry-cleaned, due to various fillings, from feather to foamy particles, and one can never be sure if it will survive the machine wash. Many people will decide on the cotton rather than the silk duvet, because silk ones need to be dry-cleaned, while the “breathing” of the material has nothing much to do with silk and cotton, both being natural materials.

On the other hand, you can still go for silk duvet, whatever they say about dry-cleaning. Just use lukewarm water and very mild detergent.

First take a small piece of cotton ball and tap the watered part of silk to see if any of the color is going to transfer. If not, you are safe to wash it, but do it gently, with water which is never hotter than 40 degrees, sometimes you will find that even thirty is hot enough!
